4th of July Jell-O Stars

4th of July Jello Stars - layers of red, white and blue gelatin make up this colorful, and fun dessert to serve at all the Patriotic holidays!

Yield: Makes one 9 X 13-inch dish

  • 2 3-ounce packages of Berry Blue Jell-O
  • 2 3-ounce packages of Strawberry Jell-O (Cherry would probably give you a darker red, but I have a child who doesn’t like cherry flavoring.)
  • 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 5 packets unflavored gelatin
  • Water as needed, boiling and cold

  1. Spray a 9 X 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and remove the excess with a paper towel.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix one package of the Berry Blue Jell-O with 1 1/4 teaspoons of unflavored gelatin.
  3. Add 1 cup of boiling water and stir, mixing until all gelatin has dissolved.
  4. Pour the contents into the prepared baking dish and refrigerate for 20 minutes, until layer is completely set. Make sure the shelf you set the dish on is level so that the layers will be even as you refrigerate.
  5. Clean your mixing bowl, you’ll be using it again.
  6. Meanwhile, in another medium bowl, mix 1 cup of boiling water with the sweetened condensed milk; set aside.
  7. In a small bowl, place 1/2 cup cold water and sprinkle 2 packets of the unflavored gelatin over the top. Let it stand for 2-3 minutes, until the gelatin looks grainy.
  8. Add 1/2 cup boiling water to the bowl and stir until gelatin dissolves completely.
  9. Add this mixture to the condensed milk mixture and stir to combine. Set aside and let the contents come to room temperature.
  10. After the blue layer of Jell-O has set, pour 1 cup of the condensed milk mixture carefully over the blue layer and refrigerate again. Let sit in the fridge for 15 minutes or until the milk layer is set.
  11. As soon as you place the pan in the fridge, prepare the next layer, the red layer, by mixing 1 box of Strawberry Jell-O with 1 1/4 teaspoons of unflavored gelatin and 1 cup boiling water. Allow it to come to room temperature before pouring it over the previous chilled layers. If you begin this step as soon as you return the pan to the fridge each time after a milk layer, the mixture should be room temperature. This way, you won’t have to worry about it being hot and melting the chilled Jell-O.
  12. Pour over the milk layer and refrigerate.
  13. Repeat with a milk layer, then Jello-O, then milk, then Jell-O.
  14. There will be a total of 7 layers, 4 being Jell-O and 3 being milk.
  15. Once the last layer had set, cut into cubes or use cookie cutters to make different shapes.

Note: I found it easiest to place the cookie cutter in a cup of hot water and then dry it off before using as it made the Jell-O easier to cut. The cookie cutter my be swallowed up by the thickness of the layers which could result in the bottom layer of blue not being completely cut. Be sure to cut completely through ALL layers otherwise you may have trouble removing them from the pan.
